The philanthropic phenomenon known as GivingTuesday is on November 29.  But what is GivingTuesday? And why the hashtag that often precedes it?

Celebrating 10 years in 2022—and in sharp contrast to Black Friday and Cyber Monday that it follows—GivingTuesday is a day of generosity. Generosity of time, effort, money, or other well-intended acts of giving. Many of you are likely reading about GivingTuesday in the media, especially after the Gates Foundation recently announced its $10 million gift to support the effort.

Fast facts about GivingTuesday:

  • GivingTuesday always falls on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving.
  • More than a day, GivingTuesday is a movement and an organization.
  • GivingTuesday began in 2012 in New York and is now celebrated globally.
  • Though not strictly a fundraiser, the amount of money “moved” as a result has grown from $28 million in 2013 to $2.7 billion in the U.S. in 2021.

Donors typically get involved in GivingTuesday by supporting their favorite charitable organizations. Many nonprofits promote GivingTuesday as an important source of funds for their organization—this year in particular, is critical as inflation negatively affects nonprofits while the need for the vital services they provide tends to increase in difficult economic times.

Beyond monetary donations, GivingTuesday activities include social media advocacy (the # in #GivingTuesday creates ripple-effect awareness online), sharing love, spreading kindness, supporting a food pantry, shopping local, or hosting a food or coat drive.

As the end of the year draws near, participating in GivingTuesday is a great way to support local nonprofits doing extraordinary work in our community. ACF encourages our donors to participate by recommending grants from their donor-advised funds to their favorite organizations.
