Education is key for Britney and her two daughters
Britney is a mother of a two. She got pregnant at age 18 and then again at age 19. Being a young mother of two, she knew it would be tough, maybe even impossible, to work and provide her daughters with good, affordable child care. By securing a job with Open Door Preschool, she was able to reenter the workforce and obtain subsidized high-quality education for her children.
“I wouldn’t have continued my job if it wasn’t for [Open Door],” says Britney. Working at the preschool her children attend allows her to stay worry free about the cost of tuition, which is a significant barrier for many families. The average cost of tuition for one child to attend a full-time license child care center is $8,836 — more than 10% of a family’s median income.*
On her experience working at Open Door, Britney says the school is “just like a big family, they help us out completely.” And her kids love it too, which Britney believes “puts them on a really great path” moving forward.
“I love my kids, they’re my world. I’m just glad I was chosen to be their mom. [They] give me the biggest hope ever. I want better for them. I want them to have the stuff I didn’t have.”
In 2018, Open Door Preschool received a $50,000 grant from the Women’s Fund, which allowed them to increase the number of subsidized child care spots available to working mothers, like Britney. The Women’s Fund – a program of Austin Community Foundation – is a giving network that supports the economic security and advancement of women and children in Central Texas.
